Timers can operate lighting for short periods of time, are activated by the users, and can be either mechanical or electronic devices that are mounted in convenient locations for the user. Libraries have applied these devices for many years in stack areas. In recent years, occupancy and vacancy sensors have replaced timers in many of these applications. Timers should not be applied to control all of the light within a large space where the space would become completely dark when the timer reaches the end of its operating time.
